Recently, the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has called for a swift and transparent investigation into the reported abduction of Intezar Hussain Panjutha, a lawyer associated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). In a statement posted on ‘X’, the HRCP emphasized the need for accountability, stating, “HRCP calls for a prompt and transparent inquiry into the abduction of PTI lawyer Intezar Hussain Panjutha, who was recovered earlier today after having allegedly disappeared forcibly for over three weeks”.
Panjutha, a prominent legal advocate for Imran Khan and PTI, reportedly went missing on October 8. His disappearance led to a petition in the Islamabad High Court, which actively monitored the case. On November 1, Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan assured the court that Punjutha would be located within 24 hours. Reports from The Express Tribune indicate that Islamabad police ultimately located Panjutha in Hassan Abdal. Following his rescue, Panjutha was taken to Islamabad for questioning before being allowed to return home with his brother, Zaeem Panjutha. During his disappearance, Panjutha alleged that his captors, who spoke Pashto, subjected him to physical abuse and demanded a ransom of PKR 20 million. He reported being blindfolded and restrained in an abandoned vehicle, where he was discovered by police after a brief chase.
The HRCP expressed concerns over the conditions of Panjutha's detention and pointed to possible involvement by security agencies, citing indications of mistreatment. "The circumstances of his disappearance, during which time he was clearly mistreated, bear the stamp of the security agencies," HRCP remarked, questioning why Panjutha was not brought before the court sooner, despite assurances from the Attorney General. The Commission underscored that "such tactics of intimidation must cease," highlighting a broader trend of harassment against PTI members and affiliates since Imran Khan's removal from office in April 2022. HRCP further observed that PTI supporters face increased legal and physical pressures, including charges related to terrorism and incitement, which aim to undermine their political activism. The environment of intensified surveillance reportedly fuels apprehension among PTI members, dampening their political engagement and public participation.
This case adds to growing concerns about the treatment of political dissidents and underscores the importance of transparent legal processes in addressing alleged abuses.
