In a significant move addressing judicial safety, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has initiated suo motu proceedings over the denial of security to judicial officers posted at the High Court. The Division Bench of Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sanjiv Berry emphasized that ensuring security for judicial officers is a non-negotiable responsibility of the Chandigarh Administration, directing it to respond within two weeks.

The suo motu case was triggered by a resolution passed by the High Court’s Building Committee on August 4, which flagged the issue of judicial officers attached to the High Court registry being denied security personnel. During the committee’s deliberations, the Chandigarh Senior Superintendent of Police attributed the situation to a shortage of available staff.

Taking cognizance, the Court directed the Chandigarh Administration to file a detailed affidavit through the Director General of Police within two weeks, making it clear that judicial officers’ security cannot be compromised.
