September 14,2017:

Police officials who do not enjoy good clean reputation will not be decorated.

The Policemen with a potbelly may not be considered for the honours such as President’s Police medals.

Home Ministry has made it clear that those tasked with the Law Enforcement have to be physically fit to be considered for any award such as the medals meant for the distinguished and the meritorious services.

In a circular issued to all the State Governments and the Central Police Organisations, Ministry stated that the Police personnel should be physically fit and must be in what it described as ‘SHAPE 1’ category to be considered for President’s Police medal.

This category is highest level of fitness in terms of  the psychological health, hearing, appendages, physical capacity and the eyesight and implies that they can be posted for any duty.

Physically fit would thus mean no flab, and certainly not a potbelly.

‘SHAPE 2’ is fit for all the duties but may have limitations as to the type of the duties and areas of employability depending on whether duties involve severe stress or demand acuity of hearing or vision.

Relaxation for ‘SHAPE 2’ can be given only in the exceptional circumstances, Joint Secretary in Home Ministry Kumal Alok has stated in the circular.

Ministry has also specified length of service  as a minimum of 18 years for the Police medal for the meritorious service and 25 years for President’s Police medal for the distinguished service is required for all the Police Officers irrespective of the rank and service.

All the States, UT's and Central Police Organisations have been advised that while making the recommendations for awarding the Police medals to the eligible officers, seniority, combined with the professionalism, may be given priority.

President’s Police medals for the distinguished service and the meritorious service are announced on eve of the Republic Day every year.
