State had imposed restrictions on the asking of Bombay High Court.
On Wednesday the SC upheld the Bombay HC’s decision banning youth under the age of 18 to participate in Dahi Handi ritual & restricting the height of human pyramid to twenty feet.
The decision comes after Maharashtra govt. had approached the Supreme court last week trying to find out clarity over the issue.
The Mumbai HC, in August 2014, had directed the state govt. to issue a circular providing details of the restrictions.
Supreme Court’s decision is critical as the Janmashtami festival is around the corner & Dahi Handi ritual is an crucial part of the celebrations especially in Maharashtra.
However, there is huge amount of risk involved while performing this Dahi Handi ritual & it leads to serious injuries, at times fatal.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis had asked people to celebrate the festival of Janmashtami but within the guidelines laid down by the Apex Court.
