Citing the Vedas as saying that those who kill cows “should be massacred”, Single Judge Bench of Rajasthan High Court recommended that cow be declared India’s national animal and the sentence for cow slaughter be increased to life.

Justice Mahesh Chandra Sharma, who retired on Wednesday, in his 139-page order expounded that,“Hindus have deep faith in cow, and keeping in mind that Nepal is a Hinduvadi nation and their new Constitution declares cow to be the National Animal. Along with that, India is chiefly an Agricultural country and the nation’s principal means of livelihood is agriculture and Animal Husbandry.

Keeping in mind the Articles 48 and 51A (g) of the Directive Principles of the State Policy and the Fundamental Duties, and to get it status of a legal entity, it is expected that Government declare it (cow) national animal.”

Justice Sharma also directed Government to amend the provisions of Rajasthan Bovine Animal (Prohibition of Slaughter and Regulation of Temporary Migration or Export) Act, 1995 to increase punishment for cow slaughter from current three years to the life sentence.

Stating that the Vedas have highlighted the significance of the cow, Justice Sharma enunciated that,“Yajurveda says Ghritam Duhanamaditin Janayaagne ma hinsi, meaning that don’t kill the cows and the bulls; Sntakaya Goghant, meaning that those who kill the cows should be massacred.”
