Nirbhaya’s Parents want Municipal Corporation to use her real name for Science Museum

Mayor of the Corporation said that they have used ‘Nirbhaya’ as legally real name can’t be used.

Taking another step towards removing stigma associated with publicly naming rape survivors, parents of `Nirbhaya’ Jyoti Singh Pandey met and urged the Mayor of South Delhi Municipal Corporation Shyam Sharma.

He told TOI that he requested him to rename `Nirbhaya Science Museum’ in RK Puram after her real name “Dr Jyoti Singh.“

Father of Jyoti Singh, Badri Singh Pandey , said that he requested Mayor to add the prefix using her daughter’s real name.

Jyoti’s Mother also added that,“We have always maintained that hiding name of the survivors of the sexual crimes only encourages perpetrator. It is shame associated with coming out of the smaller harassment that people are encouraged to do larger crimes”.

Mayor Shyam Sharma stated that they had named museum as `Nirbhaya’ since the Court order prohibited them from using actual name of rape survivors.

In order to rechristen any park, road or other corporation properties, matter is taken up by naming renaming committee of civic body which is headed by mayor and major functionaries from both ruling party and opposition. TOI
