Action follows fire at the Trade House building in the Kamala Mills compound. Each of the 24 administrative ward has three dedicated departments building and factory, medical officer of health, and fire whose primary duty is to keep a check on such violations.
More than 100 BMC officers and engineers could face inquiry and action for allowing the illegal alterations and encroachments in resto-bars, pubs and restaurants in their jurisdictions.
Dereliction of duty has come to the fore after BMC found violation of the rules at more than 600 establishments in Mumbai and demolished illegal alterations like terrace being converted into the resto-bars on Saturday and Sunday.
Municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta has directed all Deputy Municipal Commissioners to form teams at the local levels to check all the resto-bar and ensure that the fire safety norms are being complied with.
Ajoy Mehta has also decided to probe why officers and the engineers did not take action against errant establishments and their role in protecting these illegal activities. It is being alleged that the civic officials were not taking action against the illegalities as they were being bribed.
Inquiry officer is likely to be appointed to check if any civic staffer has been in the same department for years, the number of the complaints received regarding the violations and what action was taken. Officer may examine financial backgrounds of such staffers and request the other departments like ACB to take over the probes.
