Modi Govt now clears appointment of 11 more High Court Judges

With this in the last three years, the BJP Govt.has appointed a total of 249 Judges in the 24 HCs.

The govt. has cleared the appointment of 11 judges for the 3 High Courts of Punjab & Haryana, Madras & Chhattisgarh, and sent them to President Pranab Mukherjee for his assent.

The new appointments are likely to be notified by Tuesday.

With these latest appointments, the total working strength of the 24 High Courts in the country is likely to significantly improve to about 63% of the approved strength.

The vacancies would come down to less than 40% for 1st time in last 3 years.

6 additional judges are to be appointed for the Madras HC, 3 for the Chhattisgarh HC & 2 for the Punjab & Haryana High Court.

Among the 3 High Courts, the Punjab & Haryana High Court had the highest vacancies of 39 judges against the sanctioned posts of 85 judges, followed by the Madras High Court that has 26 vacancies against approved strength of 75 & the Chhattisgarh High Court had 11 posts vacant against the sanctioned strength of 22.

Thus, the approved strength of the 24 HCs’ll now increase to 674 judges against combined approved strength of 1079 HC judges.

The Law minister Ravi Shankar Prasad had said last week that the NDA govt. has notified maximum appointments of judges for the High Court since 1989.

In the last 3 years, the BJP-led govt. has appointed 249 judges in the 24 High Courts, besides making permanent 224 judges in these High Courts & notifying appointment of 17 judges in the Supreme Court.
