G.S.R. 576(E). - In exercise of the powers conferred by section 87 of the Punjab Re-organisation Act, 1966 (31 of 1966), the Central Government hereby extends to the Union territory of Chandigarh, the Punjab Panchayati Raj (Amendment) Act, 1997 (Punjab Act No. 9 of 1998), as in force in the State of Punjab on the date of this notification, subject to the following modification, namely:-

Modifications

In section 1,-

(i) in sub-section (1), for the words, brackets and figures "the Punjab Panchayati Raj (Amendment) Act, 1997", the words, brackets and figures "the Punjab Panchayati Raj (Amendment) Act, 1997, as extended to the Union Territory, Chandigarh," shall be substituted;

(ii) for sub-section (2), the following sub-section shall be substituted, namely :-

"(2) It shall come into force at once."

In section 2 , after the words and figures "the Punjab Panchayati Raj Act, 1994", the words "as extended to the Union Territory of Chandigarh" shall be inserted.
Section 3 shall be omitted.

Annexure

An Act further to amend the Punjab Panchayati Raj Act, 1994.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Punjab in the Forty-eight Year of the Republic of India, as follows :-

Short title and commencement.- (1) This Act may be called the Punjab Panchayati Raj (Amendment) Act, 1997;

(2) It shall come into force with immediate effect.

Amendment of section 12 of Punjab Act 9 of 1994.- In the Punjab Panchayati Raj Act 1994 in section 12, in sub-section (1), for the existing proviso, the following proviso shall be substituted, namely :-

"Provided that not less than one-third of the total number of offices of the Sarpanches of Gram Panchayats in the District reserved under sub-section (1) shall be reserved for women belonging to the Scheduled Castes".
