An Act to amend certain Laws to alter the name of the city of Bangalore and certain other places in the State of Karnataka.

Whereas it is expedient to amend certain Laws to alter the name of the city of Bangalore and certain other places in the State of Karnataka for the purposes hereinafter appearing;

Be it enacted by the Karnataka State Legislature in the Sixty- seventh year of Republic of India, as follows:-

  1. Short title and commencement.- (1) This Act may be called the Karnataka Alteration of names of certain places Act, 2016.

(2) It shall come into force at once.

Object & Reasons6
  1. Definition.- In this Act, unless the context otherwise requires, "Law" includes any enactment, ordinance, regulation, order, bye-law, rule, scheme, notification or other instruments having the force of law in the whole or any part of the State of Karnataka in respect of which the Karnataka Legislature has competence to make law.
  2. Alteration of names.- On and from the date of commencement of this Act, for the names of places specified in column (2) of the Schedule occurring in any law in force in the State, the corresponding names specified in column (3) thereof shall be substituted.
  3. Construction of references.- Unless the context otherwise requires, any reference to the names of the places referred to in column (2) of the schedule in any Law, after the commencement of this Act be construed as a reference to the corresponding places referred to in column (3) thereof.
  4. Validation and savings.- Nothing contained in section 3 amending the names specified in column (3) of the Schedule in respect of places specified in column (2) shall affect the previous operation of any notification, order, rule or bye-law issued or made or anything done or suffered under any State enactments as they exist on the date of commencement of this Act, or any right, privilege, obligation or liability already acquired, accrued or incurred under any such law.
