The Merchant Shipping (Carriage of Medical Officers) Rules, 1961

G.S.R. 987, dated 29th July, 1961. - In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of section 173 of the Merchant Shipping Act,1958 (44 of 1958) the Central Government hereby makes the following rules, namely:-
- Short Title and Application.-(1) These rules may be called the Merchant Shipping (Carriage of Medical Officers) Rules, 1961.
(2) They shall apply to foreign-going ships, registered under the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958, other than sunbathed passenger ships and pilgrim ships.
- Medical Officer to be carried on board in certain cases.- Every foreign-going ship carrying more than one hundred persons (including the crew)shall have on board as part of her complement a Medical Officer possessing the qualifications specified in rule3.
- Qualification of Medical Officer.- (1) Every Medical Officer referred to in rule 2 shall be a person possessing a degree in medicine and surgery of any recognised University and shall also be enrolled as a Medical Practitioner on the register of the Medical Council of State.
(2) Every such Medical Officer shall also hold a license issued by the Health Officer of the port of department of the ship, in the form set out in Annexure to these rules.
(3) Every license issued under sub-rule (2) shall be in force for a period of two years.
Provided that where, at the time of expire of the license the ship carrying the Medical Officer is on the Medical Officer is on the seas beyond India, the license shall be deemed to in force until the ship return to the port.

From Of License To Be Granted To Medical Officer
The bearer of this ................................................................ holding degree in medicine and surgery from.............................................. and enrolled as a medical practitioner on the register of the Medical Council of the ..... .............................. State, is licensed to be carried as the Medical Officer of a foreign-going ship under section 173 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958 (44 of 1958).
This license shall be in force for two years from this date.
