G.S.R. 587(E). - In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of Section 21, read with Section 7, of the Coinage Act, 1906 (3 of 1906), the Central Government hereby makes the following rules, namely :-

  1. Short title and commencement.- (1) These rules may be called the Coinage (Standard Weight and Remedy of Commemorative Coins of Rupees One Hundred (Containing Silver 50%, Copper 40%, Nickel 5% and Zinc 5%) and Rupees Five (Containing Copper 75% and Nickel 25%) coined in the memory of "Bhagwan Mahavir" Rules, 2001.

(2) They shall come into force on the date of their publication in the Official Gazette.

  1. Definition.- In these rules, "Act" means the Coinage Act, 1906 (3 of 1906).
  2. Standard weight and remedy allowed on coins of certain denominations, coined in the memory of "Bhagwan Mahavir".- The Standard weight of the coins of the following denominations, coined under the provisions of Section 6 of the Act, in the memory of "Bhagwan Mahavir" and the remedy allowed in the making of such coins shall be as specified in the Table below :-

5 Rupees 9 Grams 1/100th plus or minus both for Copper and Nickel, that is to say, Copper could vary from 74% to 76% and Nickel from 24% to 26%. 1/40th plus or minus, that is to say, the weight could vary from 8.775 grams to 9.225 grams.
