Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT)

IntroductionThe Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas (MOP&NG), Government of India set up The Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT) at Jais, Dist. Amethi, Uttar Pradesh through an Act of Parliament (“Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology Act 2007"). RGIPT has been accorded the eminence of being an “ Institute of National Importance” along the lines of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT).

The Institute is empowered to award degrees in its own right. RGIPT is co-promoted as an energy domain specific institute by six leading Oil Public Sector Units (ONGC, IOCL, OIL, GAIL, BPCL and HPCL) in association with the Oil Industry Development Board (OIDB)

The Institute is associating with leading International Universities/Institutions specializing in the domain of Petroleum Technology.

The prime objective of the Institute is to provide world class education, training, and research to roll out efficient human resources to meet the growing requirements of the Petroleum & Energy sector. The aspiration is to develop India as a global manpower hub for the entire Petroleum and Energy Sector.

RGIPT has an ambitious plan—to offer a number of Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree programs, PG diploma courses and Doctoral programs in Petroleum Technology and Management in phases. From the academic year 2008-2009, RGIPT has been imparting the MBA program and two Technical programs.

Assam Centre

With a view to supplement its on-campus academic offerings, the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology proposed to promote the establishment of a constituent off-campus academic Centre in the State of Assam mainly catering to the spawning of skilled blue collar workers in specific areas in the domain of the Hydrocarbon sector.

The location at Sivasagar in the upper reaches of the Brahmaputra Valley for the Centre is considered appropriate in view of the extensive oil field activities being carried out in the vicinity and its proximity to Gas Cracker Plant. It is proposed to establish the ‘Assam Centre of RGIPT’ on a piece of land admeasuring 10 acres.

The primary objectives of the Assam Centre of RGIPT is envisaged to offer programs of education and training of skilled technical manpower at the diploma and advance diploma level courses in various areas in the domain of the petroleum sector as per requirements of the oil, gas and petrochemical industries.

Third campus of RGIPT, “ENERGY INSTITUTE, BANGALORE” is proposed in Bengaluru – which is envisioned to be a distinguished energy research institute offering world class research, and education, so as to be ranked in the top 20 institutes of the world in next 20 years.

The purpose of the Energy Institute is to drive economic growth through Energy R&D, Technology development, Energy innovation and entrepreneurship. The INSTITUTE would conduct cutting-edge industrial, technological, and basic research; Offer education to students; and Training to industry professionals in the field of energy. The institute is also aiming to create Energy Experience Centre, Incubation Cell / E-Cell, Office of licensing and commercialization to facilitate immersive experience of energy technologies.

For setting up of the Institute, a land of 150 acres has been allotted to RGIPT by Government of Karnataka in Kambalipura, Hosakote Taluk. While construction of this Centre of Excellence in Kambalipura land would require a few years, academic sessions would begin from the year 2018-19 from a temporary campus of Visvewaraya Technological University Campus, MUDDENAHALLI (Chikkaballapur District). To start with three M Tech Programmes are designed in the fields of Renewable Energy, Power and Energy Systems Engineering and Energy Science and Technology that would commence from September 2018.

Infrastructure

A Centre of Excellence, is proposed to be set up; a state of the art campus would be developed in 150 acre land in Kambalipura, Hosakote Taluk. A temporary campus is also being set up at MUDDENAHALLI (Chikkaballapur District), the birth place of Engineer Statesman, SIR M VISVESWARAYA for commencing with three M Tech Programme designed in the fields related to ENERGY.

Research

Currently RGIPT has planned over 30,000 sq.m. is on the Main Campus at Jais, UP

The programme for setting up centers of the Research & Development is as follows:

  1. Enhanced oil recovery
  2. Process intensification
  3. Environment, Health, Safety and Security
  4. Research labs/ centers; etc.

Placement

RGIPT will strive to facilitate student placement—both for summer internships and final job placements. By virtue of its lineage, RGIPT is uniquely placed to leverage the extensive industry network developed on its own and through its promoters, the leading Oil PSUs (ONGC, BPCL, IOCL, HPCL, GAIL, OIL and OIDB). For this endeavour, a placement cell will be formed, which will engage in constant interaction with the industry by way of seminars, summer internships, research projects, and on-campus and off-campus initiatives.

The profile of the students seeking placement assistance will be made available to the prospective employers. Personality Development workshops and intensive preparatory training for interviews will be imparted as a part of the placement program.

RGIPT shall endure to develop the placement exercise as a joint effort between the Institute and the students. RGIPT will provide guidance, support and will network with potential employers. Students who have equal responsibilities in the placement process will participate in policy formulation, the logistics of campus interviews etc.
