"The fisher communities all over India are bewildered at such derogatory remark made by the Honourable Supreme Court Judge so highly respected by all.”

National Fisherfolk Forum, a national confederation of state-level fisher federations, has issued a statement condemning the observations made by Supreme Court Judge Justice D.Y. Chandrachud.

The statement was made by the Supreme Court Judge during the hearing in the Loya case.

On 5th February, during the hearing of the PILs seeking probe into Judge Loya’s death, Senior Advocates Dushyant Dave & Pallav Shishodia had engaged in a heated war of words, which prompted Justice Chandrachud to intervene. Addressing the 2 counsel, Chandrachud J. had remarked,

“Let us not reduce the dialogue in this Court to the level of fish market.”

The Fisherfolk Forum has taken objection to the same. In its statement, the Fisherfolk community has said,

“the utterance of Honorable Justice is tantamount to disrespecting the total fisher communities & so highly condemnable. The hearts of the fisher community are pained as he has mentioned their activity in a case which has nothing in common."

"We would like to know from the Honorable Justice the earthly need to mention the fish market in this case. More so, we'd like to know why the activities of the fish market should be mentioned in such bad color."

"The fisher communities all over India are bewildered at such derogatory remark made by the Honourable Supreme Court Judge so highly respected by all.”

The community has demanded that the Judge withdraw his statement in open court.

“I demand on behalf of fisher communities all over India that the Honourable Justice should take back the unparliamentary words in the very same forum where it was uttered”
