Varanasi flyover collapsed leading to 18 deaths: officials booked for Culpable Homicide & Mischief

Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM suspended 4 officials after the collapse.

On Tuesday, officials of the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation were booked for Culpable Homicide not amounting to Murder, after a portion of an under-construction flyover in Varanasi collapsed which led leading to 18 deaths.

The FIR was lodged on Wednesday at the Sigra police station on the complaint of sub-inspector Dhananand Tripathi.

Though it doesn’t name anyone, the FIR has listed the supervisory officials & contractors & staff appointed by them for various tasks, among the accused.

Section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), Section 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) & Section 427 (mischief) of the Indian Penal Code have been invoked. Section 3 & Section 4 of the Public Property Damage Prevention Act 1984 are also mentioned in the FIR.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Keshav Prasad Maurya suspended 4 officials – chief project manager HC Tiwari, project manager K.R Sudan & assistant Engineer Rajesh Singh & engineer Lal Chand – after holding them “prima facie” responsible for the incident.
