October 27,2019:

Supreme Court Collegium has given its nod to the names of the judicial officers Lalit Batra and Arun Kumar Tyagi who were recommended by Punjab and Haryana High Court Collegium for elevation as HC Judges about 6 months ago.

Supreme Court Collegium, comprising CJI Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Madan B Lokur and Justice Kurian Joseph recommended that elevation of another Judicial Officer, Neena Chaudhary, be remitted to Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice.

Collegium has already resolved to recommend the names of four advocates, Manjari Nehru Kaul, Harsimran Singh, Arun Kumar Monga and Manoj Bajaj, as Judges of Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Once appointed, strength of Judges in P&H High Court will go up to 53.

As of now, High Court has just 47 judges, against the sanctioned strength of 85, is among the top three courts in the country in terms of vacancies. The other two courts facing acute shortage are Allahabad and Madras.
