October 10, 2018:

Senior Advocate Tushar Mehta has been appointed 'Solicitor General' of India. He has been serving as the Additional Solicitor General in the current profile.

Appointment Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Senior Advocate Tushar Mehta as 'Solicitor General' of India with effect from the date of assumption of charge of the Office for a period till June 30, 2020, or until further orders.

The post was vacant for 11 months before the appointment came out.

Senior Advocate Ranjit Kumar had resigned from the post of Solicitor General on October 20 last year.

Tushar Mehta is from Gujarat. He has been serving as Additional Solicitor General since mid-2014 when the new BJP Government formed at the Centre.

He has appeared in many significant cases for Centre including the challenge to Section 66 A of Information Technology Act.
