August 16,2017:

In 2015, the then CJI H L Dattu had dismissed a PIL Video recording of Court proceedings.

Shedding its reluctance for years forthe  audio-video recording of the  court proceedings, Supreme Court has now favoured installation of the CCTV cameras in all the courts, including in Supreme Court itself, to record the proceedings after Centre backed the proposal.

Bombay High Court in 2016 had denied permission to introduce video recording, stating that, "These are courts, not the stages and sets from The Truman Show."

Hinting that it is willing to examine issue afresh, Apex Court Bench comprising of Justice A K Goel and Justice U U Lalit, which had in March directed the HCs to install the CCTV cameras inside courtrooms in the two districts of every state and  the Union territory, questioned as to Why shouldn't proceedings in the Tribunals, the HCs and Supreme Court be also recorded as is being done in many other countries.

Supreme Court Bench, which had directed only the video recording of the lower court proceedings, permitted audio recording also.

Additional Solicitor General Maninder Singh, appearing for Centre, told Court that SC e-committee had earlier decided against the recording of proceedings in Apex Court.

But Court added that it was a decision taken on administrative side, indicating that it could be examined on judicial side.
