Justice Agrawal will take over from Justice DK Jain who retires on 31st May . The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has reportedly approved Justice Agrawal’s appointment as the President of the Commission.

Justice Agrawal retired on 4th May 2018. In his farewell speech, Justice Agrawal said that the “Bar & Bench are 2 sides of the same coin” & highlighted the shared responsibility of both the institutions in upholding the legal values & justice.

He said, “Both are indispensable to our free society. The independence of the judiciary is one of the pillars of democracy & the lawyers have worked hard for maintaining this democracy. The freedom of the bar presupposes the independence of the judiciary… Both the bar & bench, though independent, are interconnected & incomplete without each other”

He took charge as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madras HC in February 2013 & 10 months later, assumed the office of Chief Justice of Madras High Court. Justice Agrawal was appointed a judge of the Supreme Court in February 2014 & served on the Bench of the Supreme Court for 4 years.
