He would remain in CJI office from January 4, 2017 till August 4, 2017.

Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar has now been Sworn in as 44th Chief Justice of India by at a function at Rashtrapathi Bhavan.

Justice Khehar took over the baton from Justice TS Thakur who retired yesterday.

President of India had issued a notification dated 19th December, 2016 appointing Justice JS Khehar as the Chief Justice.

Justice Khehar  would remain in CJI office from January 4, 2017 till August 4, 2017.

It is pertinent to mention here that Supreme Court had dismissed as many as three petitions challenging the elevation of Justice Khehar to the CJI office.

Justice Khehar became a Judge in the Supreme Court on September 13, 2011. He led the constitution bench which held the NJAC Act unconstitutional.

Now the SC Collegium, after retirement of Ex. CJI Thakur, would comprise of Chief Justice Khehar, Justice Dipak Misra, Justice Jasti Chelameswar, Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Madan B. Lokur.
