The National Green Tribunal (NGT) is taking a strong note of the concretisation of open space, pedestrian paths, & strangulating trees & has ordered the use of perforated tiles permitting percolation of water for boosting ground water instead of interlocking tiles.
National Green Tribunal principal bench has also ordered to constitute a joint committee comprising the principal secretary, ministry of urban development, Punjab, principal chief conservator of forests, state PCB and deputy commissioner of Mohali to monitor & protect the environment.
NGT further ordered that the committee should meet within four weeks, undertake site visits, look into the grievances of the applicant & take requisite action to restore the environment protection & recharge of ground water with due process of law.
The joint committee may, besides taking into consideration judgment or directions of the Supreme Court and NGT, also consider the aspects while submitting the factual & action taken report.
The joint committee will act to use perforated tiles permitting percolation of water for boosting ground water. Committee will also ensure landscaping of open spaces & roadside & developing greenbelt along the roadside with avenue plantation of native species. De-concretisation of standing trees with proper space for proper rooting & growth of the tree on the pretext of parking area requirement & roadsides, in the name of pedestrian path, right up to the neck of existing trees will also be monitored b the joint committee, ordered the NGT principal bench.
The action came after the grievance letter petition sent by Sahil Garg, a resident of Phase 10, Mohali regarding concretisation of open spaces. The letter petition is registered as original application.
