August 11,2018:

A year after death of National Law University (NLU) Jodhpur student, Vikrant Nagaich, Police are yet to come up with an answer in the case.

Vikrant was found dead in an open ground near Railway Track on August 14, 2017, behind Laxmi Guesthouse in Jodhpur. The place is generally crowded by the NLU students.

Initially, Jodhpur Police had registered a case under Section 174 of CrPC which deals with Procedure that Police need to follow in cases of suicide and unnatural death.

Later, Vikrant’s Father, Colonel Jayant Kumar, an Army Officer, suspected foul play. He had written to State Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria and senior police officials about it. After which in May,2018, Crime Branch ordered a probe into the death.

There was a twist to the case in June when Crime Branch registered a case of murder against unknown persons under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code at Mandor Police Station in Jodhpur.

At present, the case is being investigated by Inspector Sunil Bishnoi.

He stated that,“There are many reasons for being suspicious, but according to the investigation we are yet to uncover any specific evidence. We are also deeply investigation a few points in this case but many things are still unclear.”

Sharing his inputs on the case, Colonel Jayant Kumar stated that, “It’s an uphill task for the investigating officer (IO) owing to the non-availability of a detailed examination report of the mobile phone from the forensic lab at Jaipur. Also, IO would benefit if the video from the Laxmi Guest House CCTV DVR is provided to him.”

According to the then Investigating Officer ACP Bhopal Singh Lakhawat, Vikrant had gone out to a restaurant with his friends at 7.30 pm on August 13 but did not return with them at 10 pm although he is supposed to have assured over a call at about 10:50 pm that he will return soon. It was the 21-year-old’s last communication. The next morning his body was discovered with some injury marks, near the railway tracks.
