Opposing the proposal to lay petroleum pipeline through agricultural lands for the Irugur (Coimbatore) to Devangonthi (Karnataka) Petroleum & Petroleum Product Pipeline project, farmers in Chennimalai erected tombstones & performed puja here.

The Petroleum & Natural Gas Regulatory Board has authorised Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) to lay, build & operate the pipeline project to carry 3.52 million tonnes per annum (MMTPA) from Irugur that pass through Tirupur, Erode, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri & Krishnagiri districts.

Work has begun recently & people in many areas oppose laying of pipelines through their farmland.

At Athikadu village in Chennimalai, farmers erected tombstones along the Kangeyam Road & performed puja. They said that officials should not cross the stone & enter their land.

Farmers said that they believe that the tombstone will save their land.

Led by former panchayat president Dhanalakshmi Periyasamy & K.V. Ponnaiyan, president of Tamil Nadu Swadeshi Farmers’ Association, farmers raised slogans against the project & wanted pipelines to be laid along the national highway.
