March 19,2019:

Westminster Magistrates Court in London has issued a warrant to arrest the Indian Diamantaire Nirav Modi. The decision come shortly after Home Secretary Sajid Javid certified India’s request to extradite him to face the charges of the financial irregularities running into thousands of crores of rupees.

Sajid Javid’s certification was sent to Magistrates Court last week.

Nirav Modi will be arrested by the Scotland Yard in near future on the basis of warrant and produced in Court, triggering first stage of the legal process to extradite him.

Issuing arrest warrant implies that Court is satisfied that there are reasonable grounds for believing that conduct described in request is an extradition offence, which includes requirement for the dual criminality.

In the case of businessman Vijay Mallya, whose extradition case is now in Appeals Court, India had sent request in 2016-end; it was certified by home secretary on February 21, 2017.

Nirav Modi has according to the sources, started a new diamond business and has been living in high-end central London apartment block called ‘Centre Point’.

He also has been given a national insurance number, which is required to work legally in the UK. He has also been operating bank accounts online, it added.
