Supreme Court Bench to hear batch of appeals in title dispute on August 11.

A Apex Court Bench led by Justice Dipak Misra is scheduled to hear on 11th August a batch of appeals in volatile Babri Masjid-Ram Janma Bhoomi title dispute.

The Special Bench'll include Justice Ashok Bhushan and Justice S. Abdul Nazeer.

The SC recently indicated that it'd start hearing the long-pending appeals shortly.

On 21st March, CJI JS Khehar, had on an oral mentioning by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, suggested an out-of-court rapprochement among the rival parties in the 68 year old dispute.

The Chief Justice of India had advocated peaceful negotiations.

On 22nd March 2016, a Bench led by then CJI T S Thakur said that Dr. Swamy’s plea to “rebuild” the Ram temple would be sent to appropriate Bench dealing with Ram Janma Bhoomi title dispute appeals. SC had said that the case would be tagged with the appeals & heard in due course.

This dispute which has seen much violence & tension over the past decades, debuted in courts since the 1950s.

In September 2010, a 3-judge Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad HC held that Hindus have the right to the makeshift temple under central dome of the Babri Masjid.

The HC had ruled in favour of a 3 part division of the disputed 2.77 acre area among Sunni Waqf Board, Nirmohi Akhara & the Ram Lalla at the disputed site. The Bench had relied on Hindu belief, faith & folklore.

Sunni Waqf Board & other parties filed their appeals in the Apex Court against the 2010 HC judgment. The appeals have been pending in the SC for over 6 years.

This litigation has records dating back to 16th Century & written in numerous languages, including Arabic & Persian. The Allahabad HC judgment, that is under challenge is itself around 8,000 pages.
