Justice C S Karnan fails to appear before Supreme Court over contempt notice

Govt. said High Court Judges need protection from Justice Karnan’s verbal abuse and wild charges.

Calcutta HC judge C S Karnan, who was charged with contempt of court by the Apex Court, has defied the order by refusing to appear before the Supreme Court on Monday.

In previous hearing, the Apex Court had directed CS Karnan to appear before the Court in person in connection with suo-motu contempt proceedings. But on Monday, neither did he nor did his lawyer present themselves before the court.

Contempt proceedings were initiated by the Chief Justice of India JS Khehar led bench against Justice CS Karnan after he continuously leveled allegations against the Madras HC Chief justice & some other judges.

After CS Karnan failed to show up for these proceedings, Madras HC counsel KK Venugopal emphasized the severity of the charges against him. He said the Calcutta HC judge had leveled malicious rape charges against a High Court judge of Madras.

The bench also took on record the recent controversial letter which was written by Justice CS Karnan to the Registrar General of the SC on 10th February, at Monday’s hearing.
Justice Karnan has said in the letter that he’s been victimized for being a ‘Dalit’ & this matter must be referred to Parliament.

The 7 judge bench decided to grant Justice Karnan more time to show cause why contempt proceedings shouldn’t be initiated against him.

Supreme Court Bench said that they aren’t aware of the reasons for his non-appearance before the court, therefore, decided to refrain from proceeding with this matter.

Apex Court has given Karnan until March 10 to respond to the contempt notice.

This is the 1st time that a constitutional court has initiated contempt of court proceedings against a Judges of the Apex Court or High Court.
