January 17,2019:

Popcorn Time also referred to as the ‘Netflix for pirates’ is a multi-platform, free software BitTorrent client which provides a free alternative to subscription-based video streaming service such as Netflix, Amazon Prime etc.

The alleged operators of Popcorn Time, as well as a user of the website, are being sued by several film production companies for Copyright Infringement.

Many production companies, including those behind ‘London Has Fallen’, ’The Hitman’s Bodyguard’ and many more are accusing Stanislav Amelchyts, an alleged Popcorn Time operator and Hawaii resident Clinton Bovee of Copyright Infringement.

The suit was filed at the US District Court for the District of Hawaii on 28th December 2018. The complaint named Amelchyts as the operator of the streaming service.

The claim was based on an IP address hosting the website, at which Amelchyts was recorded as the tenant.

The companies claim that Amelchyts was profiting from the sales of Virtual Private Network (VPN) services promoted by Popcorn Time. Clinton Bovee, a Honolulu resident shared and downloaded Copyright protected material using Popcorn Time.

The lawsuit states “The deceptive language of Stanislav Amelchyts’s promotions convinced Bovee that Popcorn Time allowed him to legally watch free movies.”

The production companies are seeking an order to prevent the defendants from infringing their Copyright and to delete all illegally obtained copies of their works. They also requested that the Popcorn Time website should be shut down and that all links to the free software should be removed.
