December 30,2018:

Kickstarter is a US-based public-benefit corporation started in 2009. It is a crowdfunding platform, where various entrepreneurs and business owners pitch in their ideas and people give money to those projects which they think would have future success. It is a good way to raise cash for a project when you have no investors.

Similar is the case of ‘The Monster Book of Monsters’ film project, which took onto Kickstarter to raise money for a ‘sizzle reel’. A sizzle reel is a small video segment of the movie you want to create which you show to various producers for getting money to start production on your project. The campaign had a target of $3,997 which was easily reached before the deadline of January 1, 2019.

However, the project landed on the radar of Warner Bros. who expressed displeasure over the Harry Potter reference. ‘The Monster Book of Monsters’ was a book featured in the third instalment of the Harry Potter saga, and also inspired the name of this Kickstarter project. Warner Bros. alleged copyright infringement due to the title. Warner Bros. demanded action from the crowdfunding medium by sending them a takedown notice, citing itself as the owner of “The Harry Potter series of books and motion pictures, and all elements contained therein. Including but not limited to The Monster Book of Monsters.”

Due to the complaint, the team behind the project removed all references to Harry Potter and the title has been changed to ‘The Monster Film Project.’ The text along with the project which stated “The Monster Book of Monsters is a collection of 100 horror stories from around the world and inspired by the book from Harry Potter universe” has been changed to “collection of 100 horror stories from around the world.”
