January 31,2019:

In late December 2018, a New York-based author and financial performance coach Denise Shull filed a lawsuit against the creators of the TV show “Billions”.

According to the complaint, a main character of the show, “Wendy Rhoades” was developed on the basis of the Copyright-protected book “Market Mind Games”. She further claimed that this character is a complete rip-off of her persona.

The TV show loosely depicts the events of the famous “SDNY versus SAC” case. The character of Wendy Rhoades is a performance coach working within a hedge-fund company. However, Shull claimed that the show creators had used the content of her Copyright-protected book without her permission.

She also claimed that the show creators did not recognize her as the inspiration behind the character or paid her any compensation. Furthermore, she claimed that this activity had caused injury to her valuable business reputation.

According to the claim, in 2015, the creators asked Shull to help them with the creation of the show. She assisted them with knowledge about all aspects of performance coach and investing psychology. However, she was immediately cut off after her assistance with the female lead character. She further claimed the main characteristics of the show and the female character was derived from her book. As she did not receive any compensation from the creators, she filed a Copyright infringement suit against them.

Shull is seeking damages, the amount yet to be decided, and injunctive relief, permanently ceasing all use of her Copyright protected materials and her persona. The creators of the show rejected all the allegations brought against them by Shull. They also asked her to stop promoting herself as the inspiration of the character.
