Home Ministry has suspended the FCRA registration of Lawyers Collective, an advocacy NGO founded by Senior Lawyers Indira Jaising and Anand Grover, in its crackdown against foreign-funded NGOs.

The order issued by Home Ministry reveals that the NGO’s registration under the Foreign Contribution Regulation Act is being suspended for a period of six months for several violations.

The Ministry report also alleges against Indira Jaising that she received payment to the tune of Rs 96 lakh from the NGO’s foreign funds while she was the Additional Solicitor General (ASG) from 2009 to 2014 in UPA Govt and also travelled abroad from the same fund.

The Lawyers Collective, NGO has also been formally issued a show cause notice as to why its registration too should not be cancelled.

Report adds that it is a violation of the law and it required her to seek permission from the government before not only receiving money out of foreign funds and travelling abroad.

The NGO and Ms. Jaising had earlier defended the payment, pointing that an ASG was not a government employee and as such there was nothing wrong in her receiving the money.

It is claimed that the present Attorney General of India too had recently obtained permission to appear in the Supreme Court of India for private parties including representing the liquor lobby.

Home Ministry claims that the NGO had been using foreign funds for staging protests and rallies all with “political hue and colour”.

Government also objected to the utilisation of foreign funds for lobbying with MPs, to influencing the political process in violation of the law.

NGO, Lawyers Collective had earlier alleged that the Government’s special interest in them is because of Jaising and Grover’s clients which included Priya Pillai (Greenpeace India), Teesta Setalvad and Yakub Memon and this is not to the liking of current establishment.

Jaising had also appeared on behalf of Sanjiv Bhatt, the Gujarat IPS officer asking for investigation by SIT into false and frivolous FIRs lodged against him in the State of Gujarat. HT
