February 25, 2019:

'Period. End Of Sentence.' bagged the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Subject this year.

The India-set film on menstruation, directed by Rayka Zehtabchi and produced by Guneet Monga, was shot in the Hapur district of Uttar Pradesh.

A part of The Pad Project, this one was started by the LA-based Oakwood School's students and their teacher Melissa Berton.

While accepting the prestigious award, Berton said that the film was created because the people in India and her students wanted to make a difference in the arena of human rights.

The feature is set in the Hapur district outside of Delhi where women lead a quiet revolution against the taboo of menstruation.

For generations, women were not provided access to sanitary pads which led to health problems and girls dropping out of school.

When a sanitary pad vending machine was installed in the area, women learnt how to manufacture pads for themselves, thereby empowering their community. They named their brand 'FLY'.
