A non-bailable arrest warrants against 8 Tamil film actors including Suriya Sivakumar has been issued by court in Ooty since they failed to appear before the Court in connection with a defamation case filed against them by a senior journalist for their alleged derogatory speech in year 2009.

Judicial Magjstrate Senthilkumar Rajavel issued non-bailable arrest warrants against Sathyaraj, Suriya, Sarathkumar, Cheran, Vivek, Vijayakumar, Arun Vijay & Sripriya, on Tuesday, after they didn’t appear before the court for a 2nd consecutive time.

The case dates back to year 2009 when a Tamil daily carried a report which alleged that an actress had raised charges of prostitution on a group of fellow actors & actresses.

This was followed by strong protests from the film fraternity, after the newspaper had retracted this report & published an apology.

However, on 7th October 2009 the Nadigar Sangam organised a protest where these actors allegedly abused the journalists.

Following this, Rozario Mariya Susai, a senior correspondent had filed a complaint with the Ooty Judicial magistrate against them under the Section 200 (i.e. Examination of complaint by Magistrate) of the CrPC for the offense of Sections 499 (i.e. defamation) & Section 500 (i.e. punishment for defamation) of IPC.

As this case came for trial before the Ooty Magistrate court, the actors moved the Madras HC with a plea to quash this case. This petition was dismissed by the HC in March after which the trial resumed.

The next hearing of the case will take place on 17th June.
