In our country, there have been several instances of economic offenders fleeing the clutches of law whenever they perceive any criminal proceeding is going to be initiated. This has placed both the government and the legal fraternity in a dilemma as to how to prevent the occurrence of such instances and also to prevent such persons from fleeing the country.
Further, most of such cases of economic offences involve non-repayment of bank loans thereby worsening the financial health of the banking sector in India. This, in turn, has a negative impact on the economic structure of our country. Till recently the civil and criminal provisions in law were inadequate to deal with the severity of the problem. But in the year 2018, the central government has come up with a legislation to put a stop to this problem.
Under the said circumstance it is pertinent to have a one-day workshop on ‘Fugitive Economic Offenders Law – National and International Perspective’ to benefit the Faculties, Research Scholars and Students on the new legislation relating to economic offenders through expert lectures from national and international experts in the field of criminal law.

Hon’ble Justice A. H. M. D Nawaz, is a Judge of Court of Appeal, Sri Lanka. He completed his LLB from University of Colombo and later joined the Attorney–General’s Department of Sri Lanka in 1990 and prosecuted in both civil and criminal cases. During his stint he participated at all treaty body hearings in Geneva. He was appointed by the Advocate General to lead the evidence before the Presidential Truth Commission on Ethnic Violence in 2001.
In 2005 he won the British Chevening Scholarship awarded by the Foreign and Commonweath Office. As a Chevening Scholar he obtained LLM in Banking Laws, Intellectual Property Law, Company Law and International Trade Law in 2006. In 2008 he won the Fulbright Humphrey Fellowship Award to study at the Washington College of Law, American University and got another LLM in International Criminal Law.
Justice Nawaz came first in International Humanitarian Law at a Competitive examination held by ICRC among South Asian Delegates in 2011. Justice Nawas also holds a third LLM from University of Colombo in Constitutional Law. He was an all-round counsel and worked as Deputy Solicitor General at Sri Lanka’s Attorney General’s Department until his elevation to the Court of Appeal of Sri Lanka.
Mr. R Prabhakaran is the Chairman and Managing Director of the firm Pravda Law Associates. He was a Gold Medalist for both LLB and LLM courses. His specialization for LLM is in Crime and Tort. His professional experience extents to being an Attorney at Ford Motors Company, Lexis Nexis and he was an in-house counsel at Larsen and Tourbo.
He has received the Super Brain Youth of the Year Award 2006 by Competition Success Review (CSR) and the Best Advocate – Nethrothaya Award 2010 by the Chief Justice of Madras High Court. He is a visiting faculty at Dr. Ambedkar Law University, Madras University and Anna University, Chennai. He has served as the judge for many national and international moot court competitions like C. Jessup Washington international competitions and so on. Presently he is practicing at the Supreme Court of India.
